Office of the Mayor

The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City and is elected for a two year term at each biennial municipal election. The Mayor's term of office begins on the first Monday in January following the Municipal Election. The Mayor's team consists of his Executive Secretary, Chief of Staff, and Constituent Services Director. His office also manages the Grants, Sustainability and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion departments.

Michael Cahill

Biography

Mayor Michael P. Cahill was born and raised in Beverly Massachusetts where he attended Centerville Elementary School, Memorial Middle School and graduated from Beverly High School in 1979. After High School, Mayor Cahill enrolled at Middlebury College, worked his way through and graduated in 1983, with a degree in Political Science.

Professional Career

Mayor Cahill spent the first decade of his professional career as an educator-teaching English/Language Arts and Social Studies in the Beverly and Ipswich Public schools as well as at the Landmark School. In addition, he also coached school and youth soccer and basketball for many years.

Public Service

In 1992, Mayor Cahill began his political career when he ran and was elected Beverly’s State Representative - a position he held for ten years. Among his many accomplishments in the State House, Mayor Cahill was widely known as a collaborative, effective law maker who introduced and implemented important legislation that is still considered innovative. Mayor Cahill served as House Chair of the Joint Human Services and Elder Affairs Committee and the Housing and Urban Development Committee. He passed numerous major legislative reforms and regulatory policies, including housing capital construction legislation, special education funding reform, and summer camp safety regulations. 

While serving as a State Representative, Mayor Cahill earned his law degree through Suffolk University Law School’s Full Time Evening program. He has been an attorney since 1997.

From 2005 through 2014, Mayor Cahill was the Executive Director of the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs. In addition to working at the YMCA, Mayor Cahill was elected Beverly City Council President, a position he held from 2010 until 2011.

City of Beverly Mayor

In 2013 Mayor Cahill was elected the 34th Mayor of the City of Beverly. Since taking office in January 2014, Mayor Cahill has stayed true to his commitment of transparency, respect and accountability as he works on sustaining and improving Beverly’s quality of life.

Mayor Cahill lives in the Montserrat neighborhood of Beverly. The Mayor enjoys traveling, history and culture, staying active, and spending time with his friends and extended family.
