The City of Beverly will take delivery of its first electric school bus this summer.  The City issued a bid last summer to lease its first electric school bus and the winning bidder was Highland Electric Transportation.

In January 2019, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced the availability of five VW Settlement Trust-funded open grant programs aimed at reducing emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and greenhouse gas (GHG) across Massachusetts, while supporting electrification of the state’s transportation network.  Highland Electric Transportation, based in Hamilton, Massachusetts, secured grant funding from the Massachusetts Volkswagen (VW) settlement program to acquire the electric bus.

The Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley electric bus will be manufactured by Thomas Built Buses, Inc. and will be powered by Proterra electric vehicle technology.  Proterra, headquartered in California, is a leading innovator in heavy-duty electric transportation with more than ten million miles of service in the transit industry. Together, Proterra and Thomas Built Buses are shaping the future of electric school buses.

The Jouley electric bus is designed to prioritize safety and durability, while delivering clean, quiet transportation and zero emissions. The Jouley has the highest energy capacity on the market with 220 kWh of total energy capacity, a two-speed transmission, and an operating range of up to 134 miles. The Jouley can charge in about three hours with the Proterra DC fast-charging system. Thomas Built Buses and Proterra offer schools the only comprehensive, turnkey solution of electric school bus, commercial DC fast chargers from Proterra, and electrical infrastructure project management.

The benefits of converting the Beverly Public Schools bus fleet to electric are many. The maintenance costs are less, greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated, fuel costs savings are significant, and emerging vehicle-to-grid technology offers a potential new revenue source for school districts.

“Beverly is excited to be acquiring our first electric school bus by partnering with Highland Electric Transportation.  This electric school bus will produce zero greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our school district carbon emissions significantly.  In addition, the total cost of ownership in the long term will save the city valuable tax dollars.  Transitioning our diesel school bus fleet to all electric is an important part of addressing climate change and protecting the health of thousands of school children in our City” stated Beverly Mayor Michael Cahill.

Duncan McIntyre, CEO of Highland Electric Transportation stated “We are excited to liaise with Beverly as they transition to all-electric fleets. Mayor Cahill is a pioneer in renewable energy and electrification of transportation and he and his team are setting a great example for other cities. They are building the EV transition blueprint for communities throughout the Commonwealth“.

Dana Cruikshank, Beverly Public Schools Director of Transportation said “A few months ago, I had the opportunity to go on an electric bus demo ride. I was pleasantly surprised by the power, comfort and the quietness of the ride.  I’m looking forward to adding the electric school bus to our fleet and to driving it this August.”

“We are proud to work alongside a strong partnership of innovative leaders in Massachusetts to deliver clean, quiet pupil transportation to Beverly,” said Proterra CEO Ryan Popple. “School buses are a great application for battery-electric vehicle technology and provide transportation that improves air quality for students and the community.”
