Rules for curbside collection
The City’s curbside trash and recycling collection program is designed for the collection of normal household waste materials. Materials generated as a consequence of construction and demolition activities are not considered part of normal household waste. Part of the cost of any repair or remodeling activity is the proper disposal of materials generated by that activity. Notwithstanding the foregoing, construction and demolition materials generated by home owners are collectable curbside with the following limitations:
- Two (2) barrels of forty (40) pounds or less may be presented for collection.
- Materials may not extend above the top of barrels more than six (6) inches
- Materials presented for collection may not contain sharp edges or points, which might cause injury to the collector.
- Wood scrap must be cut to forty-two (42) inches in length and bundled with tape or twine and set next to barrels. Bundles must weigh less than fifteen (15) pounds and any splinters or fastenings removed or covered.
- Fence materials: Wood fence scrap must be cut to forty-two (42) by twenty-four (24) inches. Exposed splinters and fastenings (nails or screws) must be covered. Wire fence should be rolled and tied in bundles less than Forty (40) pounds. Chain link fencing cannot be collected.
- Carpet must be cut into forty-two (42) inch strips and rolled and bound with tape or twine.
- Sheet goods flooring (linoleum) should be cut into forty-two (42) inch strips and rolled and bound with tape or twine.
- Windows: two windows with frame will be accepted up to 42 x 50 inches. Remove or cover all fastenings and splinters. Glass panels, glass doors and glass shower enclosures cannot be accepted.
- Brick, Concrete and Asphalt (including ceramic tile) are not collectable.
- Paint and solvents: Latex paints must be thoroughly dried. Empty cans should be left without covers on top of or beside refuse containers. Oil based products are accepted only at annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection events.
- Plumbing Fixtures: Sinks and toilets may be placed with regular trash. Tubs must be broken apart and will be picked up with monthly “white goods” collection.
- Asbestos containing materials are never collectable with curbside trash.
- Miscellaneous metal items may collectable with monthly “white goods”. Call the Engineering Department for details.
The City of Beverly does not have the ability to pick up any construction and demolition material (unacceptable refuse) put out on the curb for municipal trash collection. The City’s contract with its trash and recycling hauler defines “Unacceptable Refuse” as rubbish from construction, remodeling, demolition and repair operations. This means that Beverly households (or by extension, their contractors) are responsible for the disposal of any construction and demolition material that they generate. To assist you, we have put together this handout. It is intended as a reference only and not an endorsement of a particular vendor or facility.
Construction and Demolition - "C&D" debris: this category generally includes asphalt, bricks, concrete (ABC) and other masonry materials, soil, rock, wall coverings, drywall, plumbing fixtures, insulation, roofing shingles, plate glass, metal, wood waste, and electrical wires.
What You Can Do
For pick up at home, call a contractor. Look in the Yellow Pages of the Telephone Book under "Rubbish & Garbage Removal”. If you want to take care of this yourself, some options follow. Call facility for pricing.
