The 7th Edition of the State Building Code is now in effect for 1 and 2-family dwellings.

CONSTRUCTION SPECIALTY LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: There are new state licensing requirements for installers of windows, siding, roofing, stoves and demolition. Licensing is in effect as of 7/1/08. Go to http://www.mass.gov/dps for more information.

6/23/08 UPDATE TO LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: The deadline to file for a license under the grandfather clause and the license implementation date has been extended.
1.         Applications for license must be received by the Department of Public Safety no later than September 1, 2008.
2.         License implementation will be delayed until October 6, 2008 (the first full week of October).




MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Municipal Inspections seeks to protect and improve the quality of life of the citizenry by providing leadership in promoting and preserving a safe, healthy and desirable living and working environment. The department integrates several different regulatory services, including building, plumbing, gas, electrical, zoning and handicapped access, in order to streamline code enforcement, outreach, and educational activities. Through this collaborative effort, the department can better manage the many and varied changes that occur as the community develops, and provide the community with a comprehensive perspective on the impact of regulations on both public and individual issues.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Improve communication with the public and with each other
Increase the use of press releases and the Internet to educate and inform the public

Improve customer service
Work to improve the turn-around time for permit reviews, while maintaining a high-caliber review
Develop flexible work schedules, to allow for inspection time that best meet the customers' needs
Maintain staffing levels to adequately address workload

Improve the technology system
Increase the use of the internet to provide a 24-hour information center
Work towards converting existing paper files to digital format, to improve access
Develop an integrated cross-department electronic permit tracking system

Improve the physical work environment, so as to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the office
Develop systems to reduce the number of paper files, thereby increasing the physical space
Upgared filing systems to improve access to archives

Improve ourselves to best meet our goals
Continue to attend training seminars to maintain certification and to ncrease effectiveness
